How Do I Do It?

A few of you have left comments on facebook or the blog asking how I manage my coupons and saving strategies. The latest success has been taking advantage of the Publix in ad coupon for a free $10 Publix gift card when you buy a $50 Amex gift card. This is a great money maker even though you have to pay a $4.95 activation fee. The reason its so great is that it gives me a balance to deduct coupons from, like the $5 off $50 store coupon, or Walgreens register rewards. I don't have to actually buy products to deduct the coupons, I'm deducting from the value of the gift card.

The other nice thing about the gift cards, is after the initial out of pocket (OOP) you can just roll the card to purchase another one, then get the free $10 Publix Gift Card. So everytime I buy one I get $10 free, plus I have store coupons for $5 off, or a $10 register reward., so I make about $20 each time I do the transaction. So far I have $100 in gift cards from my initial OOP of $39, plus all the groceries in the past few days have been free. It has decreased my OOP for the year to only $87 for $1253 worth of product (93% savings).

I know this sounds confusing and it is. I'm not trying to make it seem simple, but it can be managed. First of all, I've been doing this for almost a year now and finally have progressed the point where I can get paid to shop. If I were really extreme, I could make hundreds of dollars this week with the Amex deal and buy all the groceries for the rest of the year with my earnings. But I don't have the time or inclination to make 40 transactions at the grocery store this week. Besides I don't really want Publix to realize they are paying me to shop since I prefer their coupon policies just the way they are. There are no other vendors out there as accommodating by accepting competitors, stacking and offering tons of coupons. I don't want to abuse the system.

If you are interested in couponing, you have to enjoy it. It takes a couple hours a week, to find and organize coupons, then plan your shop, and clip the coupons you need. I don't clip coupons until I need them. I get two Sunday papers and pull out the Smartsource and Redplum, General Mills or Proctor and Gamble inserts. I write the date on the front, and put them all back in the plastic bag the paper comes in, and I file them in the front of my coupon box. I don't even look at them, just date and file. I do the same with the Publix Green and Yellow advantage buy flyers, and other coupon books - just file them in the coupon box.

I subscribe to over 100 RSS feeds and the majority are coupon blogs with all the deals. If you are interested in learning how to set up a RSS feed reader I have created a job aid I could share that shows screen shots and has instructions on how to set it up. My favorite blog is www.iheartpublix.com because she gets the ad posted on her blog with coupon matchups on Monday afternoon, 2 days before it comes out on Wednesday.. This way I can see if there is anything I need, or anything I can get for free, and best of all anything I can make money on. I note the items I want and start my own spreadsheet with item, quantity, price, if its BOGO, coupons, and final price, plus a column for coupon details (value, date and insert type; ie. $1/1 2-14RP means $1 off 1 item found in Feb 14 redplum).

One important thing to make couponing extremely successfully, is to occasionally buy stuff you have absolutely no need for. For example, if you get the $4/1 Knox Gelatin coupon from your Jan 17 RP insert, it says "any" size. Knox makes a plain gelatin product that costs $1.39. Well the coupon deducts $4, so it is a $2.61 profit for each one you buy. I have no need for gelatin, so I donate it to someone at work who gives it to the elementary school she tutors at, so they can make fingerpaints.

But you might say, how do you know this coupon is out there when you don't even clip until you need it? Well, that's where the blogs come in – they all post this deal over and over since its such a good one.

Another important way to make couponing so successful is quantity. Using one gelatin coupon isn't going to save you tons of money, only $2.61. So you need a bunch of them. Sometimes the great coupon is a printable from a companies website or from coupons.com (click the banner on my sidebar), and you'll need more than one computer. I have four, and two old ones are only for coupon printing that I hook up to and print about once a month if needed. If the coupon is in the newspaper, either buy them from a coupon clipping service or ebay, or get your coupons from asking people at work or your neighbors, or collect them from recycle bins on recycle day when people put them out, or on Mondays hit the apartment recycle bins, or newspaper recycle drop off centers at stores like Walmart.

I take the dog for a walk on Monday nights when recycle day is Tuesday, and get inserts that way. Pretty soon you get to know which houses always throw out coupons and which don't .I can walk down one block and get 5 inserts, and another block to get my count up to 8 or 10. It takes about 20 minutes and I'm well stocked. It helps to go to the nicer part of the neighborhood where people are less likely to use coupons. If its raining, it's a little tougher since people won't bother putting out recycling bins, so I'm out of luck. If it's a great coupon weekend with like 4 inserts, I'll usually buy some extra papers if it might rain on Monday.

So now I've got my coupons, and I've got my Publix Sneak Peek and started my plan for the next week. The great thing about the sneak peek is that you can see if an item will be on sale next week, or should you use your coupon now. Sometimes when coupons expire at the end of the month, its better to just use it now rather than wait for a BOGO to stack it with. I have some coupons I got from home mailers that will stack with BOGO, like Zatarains rice mix. It is $2.29 and BOGO, and I have 15 $0.50 coupons. So it makes each box 2.29/2=1.15-0.50=0.65 each. It would be great if Publix doubled coupons but they don't so this is the best deal I can expect to get, 0.65 each. So here's the entry on my spreadsheet.

When I have everything on my list I check the coupon to item ratio to make sure there are more items than coupons or equal items as coupons. Below you can see I have 28 coupons, and 41 items so its okay. Otherwise the register won't accept the excess coupons and requires manager override from a store supervisor.

I mostly only buy the items on my list, no impulse shopping. If I need it I'll write it down and come back another time to get it when I have a coupon. If it's something like bananas with no coupon, and I forgot to write it on the list but we normally get them, then I'll get it.

How I Changed from Owing Taxes to Getting a Refund

I did my taxes a couple weeks ago using Taxact (I used to use Turbotax but they charge now for anything other than basic) and determined that we owed $92 in taxes. Not bad, but not a refund. The trouble with having to pay is you have to tear out all the little w2 forms and write a check and find a big envelope and remember to wait for April 15th to mail it all in. I like to just do it, and be done with it, and move onto the next big deal.

Well today I was reading the Sunday paper with my valentine in bed this morning and saw a little tip printed in the business section about to how to reduce what you owe to Uncle Sam. Just make a contribution to a traditional IRA account for the year 2009 and it will reduce your taxes. Well, that seems simple. I'd rather pay myself a few hundred bucks to an IRA than pay $92 to Obama. So I logged into Taxact adjusted some numbers and determined I can contribute $350 into an IRA and this swings our taxes to a refund of $8. Whalaaa - I can just file online and not have to print and sign all those stupid papers, and get we'll get a refund to boot - direct deposited into our checking.

So, if you haven't done your taxes - get to it. Its free to use Taxact online and you'll get an idea of what your obligation or refund will be. And you still have time to change it if you owe.

Publix Pays

I'm not sure exactly how to report my latest shopping trip, but I think I got paid to shop at Publix. I bought the usual salad fixin's and some BOGO items with matching coupons to make them really cheap. The money makers were the knox gelation (4) and some shedds country crock (2). I did happen to have two $5 off $50 Publix coupons I could use since the total was over $100, and the free milk gallon with $100 purchase coupon, plus an $8 walgreens register rewards coupon. The unique thing was the sale this week on American Express $50 gift card get a free $10 Publix gift card. There was a $4.95 activation fee on the AMEX card, so it was only a $5 money maker.  Well, at the end of the transaction, I paid $39 and walked away with a cart full of groceries and $60 in gift cards. So, I think they paid me $21 to take away my groceries.

I did the same thing today saved $51, spent $39 and walked away with a bag of groceries and $60 in gift cards. I used the Amex card from yesterday to pay so no OOP from my wallet. Now I have $80 in gift cards remaining, and my OOP was $39 from the initial shop. So $41 of it is profit.

Now I'll be able to pay for my groceries for about 2 or 3 months with those gift cards. It's absolutely amazing that this is legit. I can't believe more people aren't doing it. It's funny sometimes in the store, I'm behind someone in line and see all the food they're getting where they could have used coupons, and then they pay over $100 or $200. I just shake my head.

Happy Valentines Day

Hope your valentines day is everything you expected. We don't usually do anything special on Vday and this year was no exception. Spent the day removing cabinets from the kitchen because of a variety of reasons, drilled holes through the concrete wall in the kitchen to move the plumbing, and sanded all the patches to get ready to paint. I'll have to tell you all about the kitchen drama that gave me a headache all day. Oh well, it'll get corrected and we'll be on our way again in a couple days.

Combining Coupons for a Great Deal

I just have to share this great post by one of my favorite coupon blogs iheartpublix.com. Even if you don't have a Publix in your area, she explains in detail how to "stack" coupons appropriately to get great deals. Its a confusing topic, but she has done a great job of clarifying for us.

Hi this is my first time trying to post the MckLinky for the blog hop to the blog via email. I'm blocked from Blogger at work and need to try to figure this out. So if its a bunch of bahooey, just leave a comment and I'm work on it from home tonight on a normal computer that doesn't the evil government restraints.

FL Offer - Free MP3 Player from Kane's Tonight Only

Saw this in the St Pete Times newspaper this morning, inside the front section. Kane's Furniture is giving away a free MP3 player from 6pm to midnight TODAY ONLY to 5,000 winners, no purchase necessary. If you have a FL Drivers License number that contains a one (1) or zero (0), you're eligible to win a free MP3 player. DH and I both have DL's that end in zero, so we're going to stop by this evening and pick up our MP3 players.

Luckily, we live right by a Kane's. There are not very many locations, so the chances of getting the player is probably pretty good, Plus its not mentioned in the website, just the full page ad in the newspaper. It has a picture of the free player and the brand is COBY. It looks like a flash drive, silver and black. No mention on the size, hope it holds more than 128 MB or something silly like that.

Good Luck

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It

This is one belief in our household, if it ain't broke - don't fix it. It kind of goes along with "If you don't make a mess, you won't have to clean it up". Consequently, we have some old stuff around our house. Our outdoor TV is 1983 JCPenney color TV, with a remote that only has 5 buttons: on/off, up & down volume, and up down channel arrows. It still works fine and we just can't find a valid reason to get rid of it, and put a new TV outside in the heat and humidity of Florida.

We also have a 1986 Litton microwave, I think its 600 watts. Everything on it works as designed and until we have our kitchen remodel done, we'll continue to use it. Then we'll donate it to one of our job office breakroom since we can always use another microwave at work.

It seems like the newer appliances we've purchased just aren't as good a quality and workmanship as these old relics, and they break or become sufficient within a couple years.

Well, I'm thinking its time to get a new cell phone. Ours is a Samsung A925 we got free from the Sprint contest in the summer of 2006. We signed up for the Sprint SERO plan for 500 minutes, unlimited data, texting and picture mail, plus free nights at 7pm and free weekends. We love the plan and it meets our needs. Come to think of it we love the phone too, since its synced up with my laptop and Nokia 800m so I can surf while driving down the highway. The problem is I have phone envy when I see all that the new smart phones can do. The cameras are sharp, the weather radar is nice and they are fast. So now I want a new phone, but the SERO plan is a thing of the past and I'm afraid that Sprint will try to switch us to a different plan when we get a new phone. The pros on slickdeals SERO forum say its not a problem, but the thought lurks in the back of my mind that it could happen.

The other dilemna is what phone to get? I"m limited by what Sprint is compatible with, but there are lots of choices that are perfectly fine. I've heard LG's have short battery life, but we love our Samsung - never had a problem in 4 years, not even a battery. Plus we have all the plug ins and chargers for Samsung - is that a big enough reason to stick with Samsung? They do have the Instinct which I think I like. I'd of course love to get it free and we have a $150 sprint credit, for plans over $39 but we don't qualify as our SERO plan is only $35 with taxes and fees included.

So, any recommendations?

Sunday Coupons 2/5/10

This weekend there will be 4 coupon inserts in your Sunday papers, of course regional differences may occur. There should be a Smartsource (SS), Redplum (RP), General Mills (GM) and Proctor & Gamble (PG). It might be a good week to get some extra papers since there will be NO INSERTS on VALENTINES DAY next Sunday.

Great News at Publix

Last night we went on our weekly grocery trip, and spent $4.04 to save $123.96 for a really great shop. There was the usual stacking of Publix coupons (PQ) with manufacturer (MQ) coupons with the buy one get one (BOGO) deals. But the icing on the cake is that Publix has decided to accept Walgreens issued MQ's called Register Rewards (RR). These coupons are indeed manufacturer coupons that state that on top, they have an expiration date, they have a scanable UPC code that begins with 5 (like all MQ's), and a redeem at address where they can send it to redeem for the cost plus 8 cents. I would recommend you bring your RR to Publix and confirm with the store manager that they now accept RR for purchases and you will notice the difference in your grocery bill.

So far this year we have spent $140 on groceries and household supplies to get $1073 in products.

My Publix Plan This Week 2/4/10

Well I thought I'd share my Publix spreadsheet before I shop, and then you can see how close the final shop is. I'm planning on asking the store manager of my Tampa Publix if they will accept Walgreens RR. I have a bunch from getting some Bayer Contour meters this week. I would much rather redeem at Publix rather than buy overpriced stuff from Wags. I plan to kindly offer:
  • That the RR are actually manufacturer coupons as stated at the top
  • They do have an address to redeem for full value plus the eight cents on the front of coupon
  • They have an expiration date
  • It says "redeemable at wags", it does not say "only redeem at wags"
  • The UPC code starts with a 5 as all manufacturer coupons do
  • It will scan on Publix cash registers like a normal manufacturer coupons so they do not need to enter it as a competitor coupon and "eat it" (not redeem from manufacturer).
Hopefully, they will give me all the right answers, like yes you can use it here.

I'm also going to start using my Upromise account to start saving for my granddaughter's college funds. I started the account in 2005 but haven't kept it up or activated coupons or anything. I'm going to ask for a Upromise card from the cashier and start using it now. For more information, go visit www.upromise.com

Anyway here's the plan, hope it's readable this week, I wrapped the fonts and took out the $$ to narrow it down. I hope to spend about $2.13 for over $111 worth of product. Check back tomorrow for a report. If you want to try any of these deals and don't understand the coupon details, you can check the complete Publix ad at www.iheartpublix.com blog. Notice I'm using 47 coupons for 47 items.

Fairs and Festivals

There's a ton of touristy events going on these days in the Tampa area, starting with the today's opening of the Florida State Fair for 12 days. Then shortly after the annual MOSI Renaissance Fest is on weekends from Feb 13 thru March 28. In between these two events is the Plant City Strawberry Festival from March 4 to 14th.

All these events have moderate admission fees that can be eliminated or decreased with some forethought. One way to get in free is to work or volunteer at the event. The strawberry festival has lots of opportunities working at a booth cutting strawberries or preparing desserts for the local churches or schools selling stuff at the festival. Just put in a few hours of work, and then the rest of the day is open for your pleasure. Another way to get free admission, is to give blood at the bloodmobiles provided by Florida Blood Services. Personally, this is what we're going to do - give blood for tickets.

You can even choose to give blood one day and then come back a different day or weekend and redeem your ticket then, that way you're not weak or tired or thirsty right after. The Ren Fest is a great event with low security so you can bring in beverages and snacks to help make it a frugal day. They even let you exit and go to your car and come back in with more goodies. We like to bring a cooler and leave it in the car to visit a couple times for refreshments.

You can also get discounted tickets for the Strawberry Festival at Sweetbay supermarkets.

Tampa Mail: $5 off $50 Publix

Did you look at your Red Plum junk mail on Tuesday? There is a $5 off $50 coupon for Publix on the front of the Publix BOGO insert. Go dig thru your recycled mail.

My Recruit

One of the biggest supporters of my fanatic couponing and frugal efforts is my DH. I'm proud to say he's even willing to venture out on his own for a deal if he's seen it happen before. Like the Bayer Contour meter deal at Wags, we each got one yesterday, and then he was tickled to be able to buy gum, altoids and other treats with his $10 RR. So this morning I sent him off to work with another Bayer coupon and he's going to stop at one Wagreens on the way home, and I'm going to check another one. Being we live in the #2 Frugal City in America (Tampa) it seems like all the stores are depleted of deals on the first day. So hopefully, one of us will score or both. How about you, do you recruit?

My Eat From The Pantry Challenge

Well if you remember at the beginning of the month, I joined a bunch of other bloggers in the Eat From the Pantry Challenge in an effort to eat some of the stockpile. Well if you read recently about my latest Publix shop where I got $276 worth of product, you probably can guess that this has been a challenge. The biggest factor in not eating a lot of stockpile items is that our entire kitchen cabinet inventory is in boxes. We don't have any cabinets while we remodel. I did manage to use of 26 of the 58 items in the freezer, but added 16 more frozen meals and snacks so the net is 48 freezer items (-10 for the challenge).

Things I learned:

1. I get nervous when I get below a par level of certain products - I like to have my regular items and it kills me to pay "buy it now" prices when I could have stockpiled it. I am still learning the appropriate stockpile of some things, but I am realizing that most things I have too many of.

2. I like the feeling of getting a great deal on stuff - I am emotionally addicted to being frugal. It is my nature down to the bone and I like to get a super deal. Couponing is a much better hobby than playing games on the internet, wasting time on social media sites and chatting online.

3. I need to plan meals more - We have food for lots of different meals, but it takes good recipes. I'm starting to notice more on the blogs I read when there is a good recipe for the foods that I've bought on sale.

4. Its hard to eat convenient foods when you're on a diet. I've lost 7 lbs so far in two weeks, but that can't happen eating ice cream, frozen snacks and candy.

So, thats my challenge.
