Welcome Springtime!

The rain started in the middle of the morning and will likely continue until dusk. The warm weather in the 60's and the gentle rain are a perfect way to celebrate Spring. Today is the first day of the best season of the year. It is a time of renewal, growth and cleansing for our mother Earth and if we choose, it can be a renewal time for us as well. Are there resolutions or habits or desires you have, but have not attempted this year? Are there projects or tasks that need to be taken care of - those important but not urgent things in your life?
Now is the time to start. Just baby steps. Investigate your options. Jot down a plan. Make a list. Next, check it out with research - make that phone call or search online for your answers. Its really not that hard to get things accomplished if you take small steps.
Now, get going.

When Things Don't Work

Last January, I bought a couple items. Actually, I'm sure I bought more than a couple items - but two of them come to mind recently because they no longer work as designed. The first one is a nice twelve inch Cuisinart pan that works great for making breakfast and dinner on the stove top. At least it used to work great, until it developed a concave rounded bottom so that only the center touched the glass stove top surface. Whenever I would try to dispense or move foods around it became a two handed operation since I had to hold the pan still so it wouldn't spin around on that nice little round hump.
It was kind of annoying, so I checked my order history on Amazon and was surprised to see it was just over a year old. So then I checked the product information and it said it had a limited lifetime warranty. I wasn't sure that my problem was bad enough, so I jumped over to Facebook and left a message for Cuisinart explaining my problem. They directed me to call customer service. When I spoke to the rep, they thought it sounded like I had a legitimate defect and they would replace the pan, after I shipped it in for their inspection.
So a couple weeks went by and we continued to be annoyed by the pan spinning circles with our food. During this procrastination, we looked for a box that would fit, I wrote up a letter explaining the problem and we wanted a replacement, and carried the package around in the car for a couple days too. Finally, it made it to the post office and in the mail - then things started happening. I'm pleased to report that our pan was deemed defective and a new one was shipped out and is due at our front door today!
I hate when things don't work. I have very little tolerance for defects in products. Just last night I was trying to print coupons on my newest Dell laptop that I just got last January. We keep it plugged in mostly by the TV since we stream video and movies from Amazon on the big flat screen. But when I unplugged it to run on battery power it died. Actually the battery has died. Conveniently a month past the warranty. I guess that's what you get when you buy refurbished stuff. Anyway, I ordered a new battery pack and it should be in business again by the end of the week.
I'm sure there will be something else that needs attention soon.

My Publix Trip - Spent $0.26

There were a couple things I wanted to be sure to get this week, the beef jerky and the Wasabi Soy flavor almonds. I found both at one store and picked up a few other things. I spent $0.26 and saved over $73.

Tips on Obtaining Your Budgeting Goals

As we find ourselves in a time of economic downturn, it is more important than ever that we are sticking to the budgets that we set out for ourselves. Going over budget in these tough economic times could mean not being about to pay our bills on time or having to forfeit assets. As these are things that no one ever wants to have to do, try following these tips that will help you to stay on track with your budget and make it through the economic crisis without worry.

1. Make a budget.
It will come as no surprise that a person can not stick to a budget that the have not made. Knowing this, naturally the first step to sticking too your budget is making that budget. The first step to making your budget is documenting your income for every month. Next tally up all of your fixed expenses, or bills. Whatever is left, distribute to categories like groceries, gas, entertainment, and whatever other things you find yourself spending money on. A key category that you should try to put money into every month is savings. That way if you do have to stray from your budgeting goals you have extra money to do so. It also helps in the event of an emergency to know that you have funds stored away if you need them.

2. Use the envelope system.
Even when you have a budget, it can sometimes be difficult to gauge your spending if you are always using a credit or debit card. A great way to keep track of your spending is the envelope system. This system is quite simple to understand and very easy to follow. You will simply make an envelope for each of your spending categories for the month and write the name of the spending category on the front of the envelope. Every month you will put in the amount of cash you have set aside for each of those categories in their respective envelopes. This way when the envelope is empty, you know that you should not spend any more for that month.

3. Do away with online shopping.
Online shopping is all to easy to do, meaning that it is all to easy to spend money that you wouldn't normally spend, and that you might not have for that category of spending. Just say no! Although you may be enticed by the ease and convince of online shopping, it will come back to bite you when you receive your bills for your purchases. If you do have money in your envelope in the category that corresponds with your online purchase, feel free to spend it online but be sure that you take the amount of money you spend online from your envelope and put it into your checking or savings accounts. This will prevent you from double spending your budget.

My Publix Trip - Paid $2, Saved $64

I was planning on waiting to do my trips on the weekend so I could get a couple gas cards, but I wanted to get some prices for some items. I got mostly the salad stuff plus some of the items which had Target coupons and limited me to two per trip. Also I wanted to see if the Spring Savings booklets are out yet (which they are not in Temple Terrace) even though I have the printed coupons. The stores are getting strict now in anticipation of the new coupon policy updates coming in April and they are reading all the small print. I'm going to plan to do all my gas cards as $50 trips with two transactions so I already have them divided up correctly at the register instead of them telling me I can only get one gas card per order and then having to divide my $100 order into two.
I've read on the internet that the new coupon policy starting April 1st at Publix just clarifies their rules, but also states that Rainchecks will no longer extend the life of coupons. No expired coupons will be accepted, even with Rainchecks. That means one of our best strategies to get MM deals after the sale will be over. I anticipate they won't get more of items so we can all use our coupons in the time period so it may mean buying the item full price before the sale, and just return it and repurchase during the sale period, therefore assuring that you get the items instead of finding empty shelves. I know I'll continue to nuture relationships with the stocker guys who order the products and they can keep them in back for me until I shop. That's the only way I got any Poise during that deal. I also intend to contact corporate when stores are consistently out of an item during a sale therefore making our coupons worthless. I think its bullshit when they say the warehouse is out, but the day after the sale is over they have stock again. Anyway, enough of my rant. We'll all adjust and reminisce how good it used to be.
So I paid $2 and saved $64.91.
