I've been out of town visiting relatives and friends in Minnesota. We had a wonderful time at the Minnesota State Fair and consumed mounds of those wonderful deep fried cheese curds! Yum. I even bought extra and brought them home to enjoy again sometime.

I was out of the coupon loop for quite a while but it only takes a little bit of organization and research to find out whats what. It seems as if Publix has continued to crack down on coupons at all my stores. I had one hold out that still accepted expired Publix coupons but they ended that on Labor Day. I missed the Mt Dew deal being out of town, but was able to get a dozen 12 pks on Monday when they let me use the expired YAB coupon one last time. So now, all my stores limit my TQs to 1 per person (we get to use 2 when DH shops with me), no expireds, and of course following the words on all coupons. Its not really a problem but I dislike the slippery slope of changes and all the additional scrutiny we endure as couponers. Also Publix had their USF Back to School event when I was out of town and I found out I didn't really miss that much. Last year they had that wonderful Budget by the Horns coupon booklet with $5/$30 good for every month of the school year. This year they didn't have ANY coupons, not even a free shopping bag! Just a bunch of vendor samples. I almost rescheduled my trip because I didn't want to miss it, but it turned out to be a non event.

Anyway, my shop was pretty small and it was mostly internet printables from facebook. I spent $1.13 for $39.58 worth of groceries, saving 98%.  I did discover that I was able to print 4 bricks MQs for the Franks Hot Sauce on one computer! I logged into one FB account using internet explorer and printed two. Then I used Moxilla Firefox to log into another account and was able to print 2 more.  That trick didn't work for the Jose Ole SS coupon though, only 2 prints per computer. I was happy to see that SAL came out with another $5 off $25 for the month.

Are You Ready For A Hurricane?

The weather news is starting to feature Tropical Updates since we've turned the corner into a busier time for storms. Isaac is stirring down in the Caribbean now and has Florida solidly in the forecast cone. While this system has only been declared a tropical storm, it is still a good time to get ready for what ever the rest of the season brings us. Are you ready for a hurricane to happen now? Here are some checklist items to help you prepare for a storm -
  •  Do you have plenty of cash in small bills stashed in the event there is no power, or you need to barter to get things you need during a disaster? Most ATM's will run out of cash, businesses may not be open and your best bet to buy stuff will be from people hawking stuff on the corner - for cash.
  • Do you have plenty of dry food (cans, dry mixes, dry milk, beverage mixes, pet food), enough for a weeks worth of meals? Make sure you have an old fashioned manual can opener too, or be sure all your cans are pop tops.
  • Do you have water or drinks enough for 3 days (at least a gallon a day per person)? This doesn't include bathing or cooking water, so a clean source of water for that is important too - fill your tub or sink for cleaning.
  • Do you have a bug out bag in case you need to leave your home - a change of clothes, cash, medications, sturdy shoes (not just sandals), silverware, etc.
  • Do you have a weapon to protect your life and/or property in the event of a disaster and there are no police services?
  • Do you have your automobile's full of gasoline, a spare 5 gallon can of gas, a full canister of propane for your grill?
  • Do you have flashlights and batteries that work? First Aid kit?
  • Do you have some basic tools, keys, portable Radio and Telephones?
  • Are your important documents secured in a waterproof safe or in a safety deposit box at the bank? Can you scan them and take the data device with you?
HERE is an excellent article outlining more detailed preparedness for a disaster.

Watch the Black Out Bucs Game on Your Computer #Free

Well, its the beginning of another Buccaneer Football season, and along with that comes the blacked out local games in Tampa area. Even though the NFL loosened the restrictions to only 85% stadium sellout, I don't see the #Bucs doing that except for a couple night games this year. But, don't despair - you can watch it for free on your computer (at 19:30 pm).

Just go to Firstrowsports.eu and click on AM FOOTBALL to see the listing of games you can see. This is also handy if you're from Pittsburgh and you want to watch the Steelers who are not broadcast locally on Tampa channels. Click on the game you want, but be careful not to click open any popups, as there are a few. You will also be prompted to download the newest version of Adobe flash player which you should do if you want to watch the game. Sometimes there are a couple choices of links to view the game, so if one link is loading slow or something, just try the other link. If you click the popups and your computer starts going crazy, close them and do a virus check with Ad-aware or whatever software you use to be sure you didn't get a virus. I have never gotten a virus from this site, but all those popups make me nervous.

We usually watch it on a laptop and using the HDMI cable connect the computer to the HDTV to view it on the large screen. So, tonight we'll be watching the Bucs - I hope they win!

Are Motorcycles More Frugal Than Cars?

Since the price of gasoline has been creeping up all summer, I thought I'd evaluate the costs of our motorcycles vs car/truck. Assume all vehicles are paid for and comprehensive insurance coverage is equal for all vehichles. The only variable is gasoline, collision insurance coverage and maintenance which will increase the cost per mile driven, but then again the more miles each vehicle is driven will help decrease the cost per mile.

We have four vehicles and they all have different functions. The fourteen year old truck is used for towing and hauling and toting the dog around. The eight year old car is for commuting and travel. The big motorcycle is for the guy and the little motorcycle for the girl. Mostly the motorcycles are used for shopping, and riding around on weekends, but occasionally for commuting based on the weather. All vehicles are paid for and all four vehicles have full insurance including a high level of uninsured motorist coverage.  Our total cost to own and operate these four vehicles each year is about $4500. But in actuality the $1000 gas costs are paid with coupons and gas cards at Publix, so that doesn't come out of our household budget. The remainder of the cost is mostly insurance. You may wonder why we pay so much for insurance, and I can assure you its not because we are risky drivers. Neither myself or DH has ever been the cause of an accident or collision. It is because we have 100/300 uninsured motorist coverage on all our vehicles. Since over 40% of people in Tampa do not have insurance, we need to buy insurance to protect ourselves from them. Another large percentage also drive without a valid license, so it is risky just to be on the road with all these people. Especially on a motorcycle. Especially when everyone seems to have a cell phone in at least one hand.

Anyway, here is the average cost breakdown calculated from our actual expenses over the last three years. As you can see the big motorcycle costs ($1311) almost as much to operate as the car ($1756). But the car was driven a lot more miles, so the cost per mile is the lowest for the car ($0.21/mile). And if we drove it exclusively and got rid of the motorcycle and its costs, the car would be even a better deal for the household. But, if the little motorcycle was the only vehicle needed, it actually costs very little to have around and use as desired for riding or commuting. The surprising finding here is that the truck is the most expensive vehicle to operate since it is used so little, just a few hundred more miles each year than my bicycle.

So, what is more frugal? The motorcycle or the car? The answer will vary for each of you, but if you keep the motorcycle insurance costs down by getting a smaller less risky model it will be more frugal. Your safety is worth something too, and small motorcycles are not as safe or easy to see in traffic. It depends on your route and if you stick to day time riding. But the cost difference is not very much. Personally, I think the risk of riding is too great to justify it with being more frugal. Don't get me wrong, riding a motorcycle is adventurous and fun and satisfies that "defying danger" excitement we all need. But unless you stick with a small motorcycle, it's generally not more frugal than a car, but would be more frugal than a gas guzzling truck.

But the best choice which has more benefits than all the above, is to just ride your bicycle.
