My Publix Trip - Paid $2, Saved $64

I was planning on waiting to do my trips on the weekend so I could get a couple gas cards, but I wanted to get some prices for some items. I got mostly the salad stuff plus some of the items which had Target coupons and limited me to two per trip. Also I wanted to see if the Spring Savings booklets are out yet (which they are not in Temple Terrace) even though I have the printed coupons. The stores are getting strict now in anticipation of the new coupon policy updates coming in April and they are reading all the small print. I'm going to plan to do all my gas cards as $50 trips with two transactions so I already have them divided up correctly at the register instead of them telling me I can only get one gas card per order and then having to divide my $100 order into two.

I've read on the internet that the new coupon policy starting April 1st at Publix just clarifies their rules, but also states that Rainchecks will no longer extend the life of coupons. No expired coupons will be accepted, even with Rainchecks. That means one of our best strategies to get MM deals after the sale will be over. I anticipate they won't get more of items so we can all use our coupons in the time period so it may mean buying the item full price before the sale, and just return it and repurchase during the sale period, therefore assuring that you get the items instead of finding empty shelves. I know I'll continue to nuture relationships with the stocker guys who order the products and they can keep them in back for me until I shop. That's the only way I got any Poise during that deal. I also intend to contact corporate when stores are consistently out of an item during a sale therefore making our coupons worthless. I think its bullshit when they say the warehouse is out, but the day after the sale is over they have stock again. Anyway, enough of my rant. We'll all adjust and reminisce how good it used to be.

So I paid $2 and saved $64.91.

My Publix Trip - saved 97%

This is another slow week at the store for me, there is not a lot I need or want. My trip this week was focused on getting produce for our salads and using a raincheck on the Nutrigrain bars to get overage to cover the produce. We did get some of the Aleve D since its on sale for $3.99 (reg $6.59) but it was sure a hassle at the pharmacy. Since the product has Sudafed and drug dealers use this stuff you have to sign a log, they need your id and enter it in their database and you can only get 2 per person every 30 days, and you need an override so you need to get a manager over to the pharmacy since there are more coupons than items and it goes negative. It was free after using coupons but it didn't help bring up my order total.

The new essentials deal with Raisin Bran is pretty good if you print the AARP coupons (just google aarp coupons). Just a reminder, the Green Advantage Flyer expires Saturday, and also the diet Pepsi $1/1 PQ expires Saturday too. Today would be a good day to ask for a Poise raincheck if you've been unable to find this on the shelves the entire sale period, your store will probably do this for you if you've not abused this privilege in the past. I also found the sheet of Shopping spree coupons on a cardboard display near the front of the store. I don't see many deals with these yet, but we'll see what comes up in the next week since they expire shortly.

My store has also tightened up on enforcing all wording on the coupons. They only allow one Sundown coupon per transaction, only one seafood $2/2 coupon per order and only one Save A lot per household. This actually has helped because now there are vitamins in stock. Before there were never any. I would rather get one than none, so I'm cool with it. Anyway, my total was $72.64 before coupons and I paid $1.94, saving 97.33%.

Dieting Hurts

My stomach is growling with hunger. I ate a good breakfast of oatmeal with cinnamon apples. And I had a banana for a snack. And some melon and strawberries as another snack. But my morning commute on the bicycle makes me really hungry. My metabolism is higher all day long. And makes my stomach hurt. I am craving carbohydrates, and those couple bottles of water just aren't making me feel full or satisfied. I want some bread or crackers, but my lunch will offer no relief with just a salad and yogurt packed in my bag.

I have a snack drawer here in my desk with cereal bars, snack bars and protein bars that I am resisting. It is to prove to myself that losing weight is not easy. It takes a lot of will power to stick with it. I know a 120 calorie snack bar won't make or break my efforts, but its the point. You should know and feel if you are dieting. If you are hungry, or exhausted at night and fall asleep in one minute, or your muscles are tight, or your ischial tuberosity is sore from the bike saddle - these are gentle reminders from your body to your brain that "Hey, I know what you're doing and it hurts".

The effort to lose weight is tough if you're doing it the right way, with proper nutrition and exercise. Do you eat breakfast everyday, at home? If not, you're probably overweight or have unhealthy issues. Do you prepare your own lunch? If not, its probably out of box or a restaurant meal and you're probably overweight or have health issues. Do you exercise at least thirty minutes every other day? If not, you probably are overweight or have health issues. These are three simple things that are frugal and will lead you to a healthier lifestyle, where you can control your weight.

But it won't be easy. It will take some effort on your part - you have to wake up earlier to make breakfast. You need to prepare your lunches ahead of time which requires planning, time and effort. Exercising is the easiest of all to fit in. Just slip on a pair of walking shoes and head out the door for 15 minutes, twice a day on your break at work. Or park in the back of the parking lot at the store. Take the stairs instead of elevator.

So, I sit here and my stomach still hurts, but my jeans are looser. Only a few more minutes to lunch time. I think I can do it.

The Incomplete Stockpile

I'm loving the $2 off $2 Publix Seafood coupon this week. I even went recycling on Monday night to get a few extra coupons. We've been getting 1/4 lb of the $7.99 scallops or shrimp each per trip and last night decided to have a seafood dinner. Remember when our freezer quit a couple weeks ago? That was where all the Buitoni noodles were frozen and apparently we threw ALL of them away. I thought for sure we stashed a few in our other freezers or the fridge but last night I could not find a single package of those darn noodles. But the great thing is they're on BOGO sale this week and I actually have the accompanying coupons so for $0.15 a package I could get some more. Except they're such a good deal the shelves are empty. I did get a rain check but, back to the dinner dilemma - no noodles.

But I do have some Knorr noodles in my stockpile, but not two packages of the same flavor. And silly me I didn't get a single one last week when they were BOGO with the PQ to make it a good deal. And the Uncle Bens rice we have is a year expired so we tossed that. So we had no rice. I didn't want to use Muellers pasta with the fresh pasta cause I didn't want to make a cream sauce and I wasn't in the mood for Red Sauce. We finally made some Green Giant seasoned broccoli, Buitoni mushroom ravioli with mustard sauce, and sauteed the shrimp and scallops with garlic, butter and bay seasoning.

It was a great meal, but it made me aware of the holes in my stockpile. It really sucks to have tons of food but not what you need. How does that happen to a stockpiler? It usually doesn't, but when it does - it needs to be a wake up call. It seems like the $2 coupons are starting up again at Publix so I'll have to round out my stockpile with some products like rice, noodles, sauce mixes and frozen vegetables.

How is your stockpile? If you're not sure exactly what you have it may be time to do an inventory and toss expired stuff and make a list of items to put on future shopping trips.
