My Publix Trip - Paid $0.84, Saved 98%

It's the rush at the end of the year to use up all those coupons that will expire next Monday! I have some free product coupons, plus all the Publix booklets and the WD booklets expire soon. I'm waiting til I get the new Green Advantage Flyer on Saturday to get some vitamins to help with overage toward some Purina One Dog Food and use up those coupons.

 

This was a pretty good shop considering I got Tostitos with no coupons, it essentially used up my overage from the SAL coupon. Now we have plenty of soup after the deals the last couple weeks, and canned vegetables too.  I spent less than a dollar and saved 98%.

Are You Locked In?

I am not delighted to tell you that we have renewed our cable and Internet package with Verizon. We now have less services, but it costs more. Go figure - less for more. Not exactly the way a frugal household likes to operate. We have had heated discussions with each other, and company representatives letting them know how undelighted we are. After the honeymoon of the being a new customer to FIOS a couple years ago, we now feel locked in. But we don't like it. And just so you know, before you get that big fancy HDTV - you're going to want to have the hundreds of cool HD channels that the big conglomerates offer for a high price. But when you get it, watch out.

In my opinion, Verizon just doesn't care about one little customer. They figure we're locked and that's that. When you believe your customers have no real choice, either because they've signed a long term contract, or the technology locks them in, or they're stranded in Okeechobee with no other options, you're likely to move away from delighting them.

This is the story of Verizon and Microsoft and Apple. When you believe that people are stuck with no options, it's not important to keep convincing them to stay there. And while you might be correct that this particular customer is locked in, it doesn't mean she doesn't have friends, colleagues or a blog. Word of mouth and recommendations don't come with a lock-in feature.

There are choices in all decisions, and it's essential to know what you're getting into when you buy that Windows computer, or HDTV, or Ipad. Getting locked in with a vendor that doesn't play well with others, or limits my choices is not going to sit well very long. Sometimes it is the low price that keeps you locked in, sometimes it is the cool, satisfying product you touch, and sometimes its because it "fits" in your system and communicates well with all your other stuff. I have found there are dissatisfiers with all my products and vendors, but usually it is not enough to seek alternatives. But sometimes it is.

So, before your contracts are up - investigate your options. Ask your neighbors and friends what service provider they utilize. Take their recommendations with a grain of salt though. Investigate reviews on the Internet, Google it and read some stuff. Find out the rules - how can you be considered a new customer again - how long do you need to stray? What will competitors offer you?
Be informed before you decided to get locked in, again.

This is a great week for sales, so get out there and get your stuff before it ends early on Monday. I'm trying to think back and I think Publix just repeats the same ad for next week, but maybe I'm mixing that up with Easter. Anyway, I spent $0.22 and saved $94.65 for over a 99% savings rate.

There are no inserts in the upcoming Sunday paper, and we haven't gotten a Publix coupon for several weeks, so you might want to stop your paper delivery this Sunday.

Publix Weekly Ad Sneak Peek 12/20 - 12/24/12

I've been out of town on vacation the last week so things with couponing and shopping have slowed down. I did manage to shop once last week at the most beautiful, new Publix in Naples, FL. There were tons of staff handing out food samples and even a harpist playing holiday music. I should have taken more pictures it was so spectacular. It had opened 3 days earlier and they didn't have their competitors figured out but they took my Save A Lot and Target coupons when I showed them the competitor card I had previously.

 

But now I'm back in Tampa, and the upcoming shop has a lot of good items to stock up. The best deal is the MM Temptations cat treats starting Thursday. My Publix Trip - Saved 85%

We don't really need much right now so I just went to get some items for our stockpile and some beer since our keg ran out this week. My DH and I both shop together so we are allowed to use two Target coupons and that means we could get free RG body wash. We also went to the store that has restocked the elusive CWS so I could get some overage toward the beer. I held onto my Powerade coupons from My Coke Rewards until there was a bogo, so I got ten free with my five coupons. We used the new Target printable for a $10 gift card when you buy $50 worth of groceries so really the total of $11.70 spent, minus the $10 GC makes it less than a couple bucks for our beer and the rest of the stuff.

How Much More Tax Will You Pay?

Only 53% of the people who read this will find it of value, those of you who work for a living. As we approach the end of the year, it is becoming more evident that our taxes will increase next year as the President and Congress are unable to compromise and prevent the Bush era tax cuts from expiring. The President holds all the cards and doesn't really need to play with the Republicans because he's already elected for his final term in office. Last time he signed to extend the tax cuts in 2010, he needed to please the electorate - but not anymore. Sure he's thrown out a proposal, but the Republicans laughed at it. There will be no more offers from his side of the game.

 

If there is no compromise, the tax increases would be significant:

• FICA would go up by 2 percentage points.
• All income tax brackets would go up by 3 to 5 percentage points.
• Tax rates on capital gains would rise.
• Tax rates on dividends would more than double.
• The child tax credit drops from $1000 to $500.
• The marriage penalty would return.

The hardest hit would be two-income couples with children, but everyone would see their taxes go up.

 

But what does this mean? Well, if you work and contribute your payroll taxes to build our highways and pay our public servants you will pay more starting next year. For the typical middle class family, it means about $2000 will disappear from your household budget as it is earmarked for income tax. You can go to the Tax Foundation and plug in your income in this handy calculator to see the difference how much taxes you will now pay starting next year.

 

What would you have done with your 2K? #My2K would pay for our groceries and household supplies for an entire year, plus pay for the dog food and all our car's gasoline. Two thousand dollars would pay for two week long vacations. Two thousand dollars would pay our property taxes and half of our home insurance. Two thousand dollars would pay for our vehicle insurances. All of these bills must continue to be paid, but we won't have the income now. It will be an extra frugal year on top of our already frugal lifestyle.

 

What bothers me about this is not so much paying more taxes, it's that 47% of people will not be paying more. The people who suck up government services like disability, food stamps, cash assistance and section 8 housing allowances. These people probably have never worked or paid taxes. They have a bunch of kids and they get a bunch of government checks each month to buy their groceries, pay their rent and provide for their sorry existence. They will not feel the pain or have the difficult decisions to make about what they must fore go this month in order to pay the bills.

 

Get ready, it's going to happen.
