How Ready Are You For A Hurricane?

The weather news is starting to feature Tropical Updates since we've turned the corner into a busier time for storms. Emily is stirring down in the Caribbean now and has Florida solidly in the forecast cone. While this system has not been declared a tropical storm or hurricane, it is still a good time to get ready for what ever the rest of the season brings us. Are you ready for a hurricane to happen now? Here are some checklist items to help you prepare for a storm -

 

• Do you have plenty of cash in small bills stashed in the event there is no power, or you need to barter to get things you need during a disaster? Most ATM's will run out of cash, businesses may not be open and your best bet to buy stuff will be from people hawking stuff on the corner - for cash.
• Do you have plenty of dry food (cans, dry mixes, dry milk, beverage mixes, pet food), enough for a weeks worth of meals? Make sure you have an old fashioned manual can opener too, or be sure all your cans are pop tops.
• Do you have water or drinks enough for 3 days (at least a gallon a day per person)? This doesn't include bathing or cooking water, so a clean source of water for that is important too - fill your tub or sink for cleaning.
• Do you have a bug out bag in case you need to leave your home - a change of clothes, cash, medications, sturdy shoes (not just sandals), silverware,etc.
• Do you have a weapon to protect your life and/or property in the event of a disaster and there are no police services?
• Do you have your automobile's full of gasoline, a spare 5 gallon can of gas, a full canister of propane for your grill?
• Do you have flashlights and batteries that work? First Aid kit?
• Do you have some basica tools, keys, portable Radio and Telephones?
• Are your important documents secured in a waterproof safe or in a safety deposit box at the bank? Can you scan them and take the data device with you?

I sure hope we manage to avoid the big one this year, and as I write this list I realize I'm not quite prepared. But I will be. Will you?

Checkout Is A Breeze?

I have to smirk when I see the new bags they have at #Publix. They say in big letters, I LOVE IT WHEN CHECKOUT IS A BREEZE. I normally don't notice what gets printed on the bags, but the long check out when they inspect all my coupons gives me plenty of time to ponder. Lately, I've been especially conscious to notify the person stepping into line behind me that "I have a lot of coupons (waving them wildly) so it may take a few extra minutes to checkout". They ALL leave. A while ago when I would warn people about the extended checkout behind me, they would say - Oh, that's okay I'm not in a hurry. Or, that's fine I don't mind.  But not anymore, they all look at my pile of paper and beat it out of there.

I know the cashier appreciates it too because they aren't allowed to shoo people away from their lines, but then they don't have to listen to the person complain about the wait after I've walked away with my stuff. Sometimes I even suggest they turn off their light (if they won't get in trouble - some managers won't let them) so people don't come into our line. And just a couple weekends ago, I asked a manager to open a line for me since I had so many coupons and would need manager override too for numbers (too many coupons compared to items - due to stacking). Anyway, I do try to limit the inconvenience for other shoppers just because I choose to  pay with coupons. It does take a lot of time and focused attention at the register to make sure they are all handled correctly, and I certainly don't want to rush the cashier.

So, I look at that brown paper bag and dream for the day, I too can have checkout be a breeze.

One of the ways we've saved is by purchasing our eyeglasses online through The cool thing about Zenni is you can just go get your eye exam (hopefully for free through a deal or coupon) and then get your written Rx for your eyeballs. Don't forget to ask the Dr to measure your PD (pupil distance) so you can order your glasses correctly. My Publix Trip - Morningstar, Kashi stuff

At the beginning of the week, I wasn't that impressed with the #Publix Weekly Ad, but then I got to digging in my coupons and scouring the ad more. The moneymaker papermate pens are still on sale and a new TQ has been issued. If you can't print more, go HERE and search for your item name and more than likely a mpp will be available for download. I was most excited about the Morningstar products since I need to focus on my diet again. I gave up drinking more than one or two beers occasionally, and now am drinking plenty of water. However, reintroducing carbs into my menu is not helping. I weigh the same now as I did the first day of the month. I'd like to try the strict 17 Day Diet again where I lost 7 lbs in June. So, that means no more bread and rice with dinner for a couple weeks.

Frugal Ways to Beat the Heat

America is being subjected to another heat wave, especially the folks up North. Actually, here in central Florida it was a beautiful, cool morning of 71F and promises to be a great day with virtually no chance of rain. It's a great day to get outside!

 

Anyway, those of you with the oppressive heat and humidity will probably want to get out early, and then find somewhere cool inside during the afternoon – unless of course you don't have air conditioning. Then you'll want to head out to some cool places besides your un-air conditioned house.

 

• The Library is a great choice for a cool indoor location that won't tempt you to spend money. You can surf the internet and read anything you want. Or you could bring your knitting and sit in a corner listening to your ipod, or favorite afternoon drive time radio show.
• A Museum or historical site is another great choice to spend some time indoors in a cool location. This option may have an admission fee, but you might actually broaden your mind here.
• The Grocery Store is always cold, especially in the frozen foods and dairy aisle. Just make sure you stick to your list. Plan your shop for the middle of the day when it's the hottest, but be sure you don't get stuck in traffic on the way home or all the ice cream and Popsicles will melt.
• The community pool or a lake – just make sure there are no gators in that lake. We saw a big one at the State Park river this weekend. If you don't have a pool or a lake, pull out the old sprinkler and a large piece of plastic and just roll around on the ground in the water, It will cool you down just fine.
• A Shady park – bring a chair and sit in the shade. If there is a breeze this will be like natures air conditioning.
• A Church – a good old fashioned big church built with lots of block will be a nice cool place to hang out, say a prayer that the heat will end soon, and hope that winter will not be that bad – you're not complaining about the heat.

Remember to drink lots of water. No, more than that even. And don't run your heat generating appliances like dishwashers, dryers and ovens in the daytime. You're A/C can only cool your house about 20F cooler than the outside temp, so if its 100F and your thermostat is set for 65F you're in for a surprise. Wear loose fitting, light fabrics and skip the socks – wear sandals to let your body acclimate and tolerate the heat better.
