#CFLBlogCon - My First Blog Conference

This past weekend I attended #CFLBlogCon, The Central Florida Blog Conference that was hosted by the Orlando Science Center. It was a beautiful facility that had lots of classrooms and the Cinedome for the keynote speaker. It was well organized and the attendees were all very friendly - it was a high energy event and certainly motivated me to do more with my blog. I would certainly recommend attending next year, especially if you live in central Florida.

Even though I've had this blog for a couple years, I've struggled to figure out my goal. At first I wanted to share frugal living ideas and tips that I do to get the most out of living frugal. I have a hard time spending money. My DH complains all the time how I'm so cheap, but it does take me a lot of time and inward justification to spend even a few bucks.  That's when I began really couponing and becoming obsessed with not spending any money on groceries. We've pretty much had free groceries and household supplies for several years now because of couponing. But it's becoming harder and harder. My Publix receipt used to always be under a dollar, but now it may be two or three dollars. And, GASP! yesterday I spent over five dollars because we decided to get some beer with our overage.

So, back to the blog conference. There are definitely some technical things I need to improve my blog, and improve my facebook presence and increase my "Likes". These haven't really been my goals in the past, but they are what others measure to understand my "reach". The very first thing I need to focus on is my goal for the blog. I'm thinking I want it to be more of a frugal living blog with storytelling and problem solving, rather than a deals blog. People who have deals blogs work very hard to constantly put out the latest deal and it requires steady updating. If the updates slow down, there is a direct correlation to blog traffic and revenue drops.

The first thing I need to do is dedicate some time to this site. After my dull workday at the government job, I want to take some of my couponing time and start spending it on my blog instead. All of these social media sites are blocked at the office, so it will kind of become my part time job after work. I need to update facebook each day, and interact on twitter, and update the website with some ads and tools to help readers share my stories. Since. I'm not skilled in code and all that technical stuff, I think Youtube will become my friend as I attempt to watch tutorials and videos to figure out how to implement some of these changes.

So be ready for some changes, and please let me know if you have any ideas to help me along.

I've been out of town visiting relatives and friends in Minnesota. We had a wonderful time at the Minnesota State Fair and consumed mounds of those wonderful deep fried cheese curds! Yum. I even bought extra and brought them home to enjoy again sometime.

I was out of the coupon loop for quite a while but it only takes a little bit of organization and research to find out whats what. It seems as if Publix has continued to crack down on coupons at all my stores. I had one hold out that still accepted expired Publix coupons but they ended that on Labor Day. I missed the Mt Dew deal being out of town, but was able to get a dozen 12 pks on Monday when they let me use the expired YAB coupon one last time. So now, all my stores limit my TQs to 1 per person (we get to use 2 when DH shops with me), no expireds, and of course following the words on all coupons. Its not really a problem but I dislike the slippery slope of changes and all the additional scrutiny we endure as couponers. Also Publix had their USF Back to School event when I was out of town and I found out I didn't really miss that much. Last year they had that wonderful Budget by the Horns coupon booklet with $5/$30 good for every month of the school year. This year they didn't have ANY coupons, not even a free shopping bag! Just a bunch of vendor samples. I almost rescheduled my trip because I didn't want to miss it, but it turned out to be a non event.

Anyway, my shop was pretty small and it was mostly internet printables from facebook. I spent $1.13 for $39.58 worth of groceries, saving 98%.  I did discover that I was able to print 4 bricks MQs for the Franks Hot Sauce on one computer! I logged into one FB account using internet explorer and printed two. Then I used Moxilla Firefox to log into another account and was able to print 2 more.  That trick didn't work for the Jose Ole SS coupon though, only 2 prints per computer. I was happy to see that SAL came out with another $5 off $25 for the month.

Are You Ready For A Hurricane?

The weather news is starting to feature Tropical Updates since we've turned the corner into a busier time for storms. Isaac is stirring down in the Caribbean now and has Florida solidly in the forecast cone. While this system has only been declared a tropical storm, it is still a good time to get ready for what ever the rest of the season brings us. Are you ready for a hurricane to happen now? Here are some checklist items to help you prepare for a storm -
    •  Do you have plenty of cash in small bills stashed in the event there is no power, or you need to barter to get things you need during a disaster? Most ATM's will run out of cash, businesses may not be open and your best bet to buy stuff will be from people hawking stuff on the corner - for cash.
    • Do you have plenty of dry food (cans, dry mixes, dry milk, beverage mixes, pet food), enough for a weeks worth of meals? Make sure you have an old fashioned manual can opener too, or be sure all your cans are pop tops.
    • Do you have water or drinks enough for 3 days (at least a gallon a day per person)? This doesn't include bathing or cooking water, so a clean source of water for that is important too - fill your tub or sink for cleaning.
    • Do you have a bug out bag in case you need to leave your home - a change of clothes, cash, medications, sturdy shoes (not just sandals), silverware, etc.
    • Do you have a weapon to protect your life and/or property in the event of a disaster and there are no police services?
    • Do you have your automobile's full of gasoline, a spare 5 gallon can of gas, a full canister of propane for your grill?
    • Do you have flashlights and batteries that work? First Aid kit?
    • Do you have some basic tools, keys, portable Radio and Telephones?
    • Are your important documents secured in a waterproof safe or in a safety deposit box at the bank? Can you scan them and take the data device with you?
HERE is an excellent article outlining more detailed preparedness for a disaster.
