EITC Tax Credit

Do you qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?  Many low-income working individuals and families qualify for EITC, and don't claim it.  You could pay less federal tax, pay no tax, or even get a tax refund.  For more information and to find out if you qualify for EITC, go to the IRS EITC Home Page.
Basic Qualifications

All Workers Claiming the EITC Must:

  • Have a valid Social Security number,
  • Not file as "married filing separate,"
  • Not file Form 2555 or Form 2555-EZ (related to Foreign Earned Income),
  • Meet the investment income limitation ($3,150 for tax year 2011),
  • Have earned income,
  • Not be the qualifying child of another person,
  • Generally, be a U.S. citizen or resident alien for the entire year.
To Claim EITC With a Qualifying Child, the Child Must Pass All of the Following Tests:
  • Relationship
    • A son or daughter (including an adopted child or child placed for adoption)
    • Stepchild
    • Foster child placed by an authorized placement agency or court
    • Brother, sister,  half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister or a descendant of any of them
  • Age, at the end of the filing year, the child was:
    • Younger than the worker (or the worker's spouse if married filing jointly) and
      • younger than 19,
      • or, younger than 24 and a full-time student
    • Any age if permanently and totally disabled
  • Residency
    • Child must live with the worker, or the worker's spouse if filing a joint return, in the United States* for more than half of the year.
  • Joint Return
    • The child can not have filed a joint return, unless the child and the child's spouse did not have a filing requirement and filed only to claim a refund.
Warning: Only one person can claim the same qualifying child for EITC and other tax benefits.  If more than one person claims the same child, IRS applies the tiebreaker rules. Read more about the tiebreaker rules here.
To Claim EITC Without a Qualifying Child, The Worker, and The Worker's Spouse If Filing A Joint Return, Must:
Have lived in the United States for more than half of the tax year,
Be at least age 25 but not age 65 or older,
Cannot qualify as the dependent of another person.
*Special rules apply for members of the Military on extended duty outside the United States.  See the Military section on the Special Rules for EITC page on  for more information.

My Publix Trip - Scenario for $10 GC wyb $100

I know I recommended against trying to get the $10 GC wyb $100 at Publix, but it is a good challenge for you advanced couponers. It definitely was something we could plan for with using rainchecks on GM cereal or salad dressing, saving Method dish soap coupons, using overage items like sominex and phazyme, saving the Speed stick and Kotex liner Kimberly Clark PQs from the recent booklet or a few other scenarios.

The problem is we're all looking for the same items and its more than likely that unless the truck just got unloaded, you're going to find your planned shop may not happen. I recommend saving the gift card scan for the end of your order to make sure you have $100 and then let the cashier do the card. If you're not close, then just don't get the gift card. Remember tax is your friend here. There are a lot of items this week that are very cheap after coupons which can help bring up your total - if you saved your coupons. I used Reach floss, Rondele, Steamfresh veggies, Purina One, Beechnut baby food. You could also use Kikkoman sauce mix, Samboazan juice (starting Sat).

On my shop, I asked at CS if I could use a Wags RR. I mentioned it was a MQ and that it scanned. They brought it to the manager and he approved it. Either answer would have been okay, but it was a yes - so I used it. This is very YMMV. Always get approval on unknown coupons before you get to the register.

This is my regular shop day where I get all our salad stuff and fruit. There were only 2 lonely sominex on the shelf, and no phazyme. Everything else was well stocked so for freebies and slight overage I got some of the unadvertised Rondele  Pub Cheese using coupons I printed a while ago (not sure if they're still available - check a coupon database), I got steamfresh veggies and some baby food to donate. I had not planned on using as many speedstick coupons but needed the overage, so I got six. Using the RR was a bonus to help me get the total down, plus a sweetbay $5/$50 and a Publix $5/$30 from the papers this week. So my savings were $135, and I paid $5.32 with a gift card, plus I received the $10 gift card for spending $100.81 - so it was a profit of almost $5.

In case you're wondering how I calculate my cart while I'm shopping when your list goes out the window, I use the Grocery Tracker app on my smartphone. Its a free app from Android market. I enter my list in it before I shop but its easy to add or subtract items or change quantities and coupon amounts so you know how close to zero you are (Isn't that the goal of shopping - to get to zero all the time??). Anyway, I would never shop without it.

Good Luck!
Remember to check back next week for another $25 Publix GC Giveaway....

My Publix Trip - Paid $8.94

Since it was the last day of the month I wanted to use up any expiring coupons. I saw the deal about the febreeze auto fabric refresher spray and picked up some of those to use the expiring febreeze PQ from the Olympic donation sheet. This has been a great week for overage and I've been stocking up on gift cards with the overage, but we have been getting lax about what goes in the cart. DH always wants his drinking water jugs and we splurged on some shrimp for stir fry with the Eat Smart Veggies we got earlier in the week. I found some more Kimberly Clark booklets so I was able to stack those PQ's with the new speed stick BOGO MQs that were in the 1/29ss this past weekend. There was also a $5 rebate when you buy $10 of products, so 4 deodorants ($10.60) is all you need to get that rebate.
So, this trip we spent over eight dollars, but got our $15 GC, plus another $5 GC for the rebate. So it was a moneymaker trip. There was $151 in savings.
I urge everyone to carefully plan your trips if you're trying to get the $10 GC wyb $100 (new in ad coupon for new sale). In my opinion, you may be better off just keeping your trips small using your $5/$30 coupons. Three small trips of $30 will earn you $15 off, whereas you can only use one $5/30 per order even if its $100 order. The optimum combination is to use a $5/30, plus a competitor $5/50 (Sweetbay coupon is in today's paper, back of local Tampa Bay section) or $5/25 and get your order to $100 to also get the $10 GC. I'm planning on buying the Purina One Beyond Dog food to bring my total up ($7.99 cost w $7 coupons). If you were a genius and got rain checks for the GM Cereal and approval to use your expired in ad coupons that will bring up your total as well.
