Stay Hungry

The world is chattering about how Steve Jobs changed everything and how he brought us such great products and innovation. I have used my Apple product today, have you? People feel the loss of Steve Jobs because they love his innovative products. If you have an iPhone I'm sure you would say you absolutely love it. Anyone born after 1984 has never know the world to lack Apple products.

But what I don't like about Apple products is that they don't play well with others. This is by design. They have designed their own proprietary operating system on Mac computers, the iPod, the iPad and the iPhone. If you want to use their products you have to pay their high prices because there is no competition. They have snuffed out the competitors with lawsuits and strict partnering agreements.

This means we need to get other products to meet the needs that these products don't meet. If you want to listen to the radio, guess what  - your ipod is useless. If you don't have a PC to download itunes, its also useless. I only use my ipod to listen to music on my bicycle rides – other than that it is of no use to me. There are other products – like my Android smartphone that can provide all sorts of services other than just listening to music, and it can do that too.

My point is that I try not to patronize products and manufacturers that aren't compatible with other products. Granted I do have several ipods – but I've never paid money for them. I got them as gifts for signing up for a checking account, for test riding a motorcycle and for clicking ads to get points online. I use my ipods but I would never buy an Apple product because I don't like the business plan they have. I don't want to be hostage to their system and unrealistic prices.

There are a lot of other huge companies out there that don't play well with others but they are changing their ways. Amazon and Facebook have realized that if they don't make their products open to collaboration with other marketers, someone else will. I have embraced the Android smart phones because Google has purposely made their products and services link together with all sorts of other products and services. I'm not sure Google+ will ever catch up to Facebook, but they give us an alternative. And when all the sheep out there get sick of the privacy invasion and the constant changes on FB, maybe they'll look at their choices.

Anyway, the world has lost a genius. If you haven't read this already you should. HERE is the text to Steve Jobs commencement address to Stanford on June 12, 2005. It is riveting.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

My Publix Trip - 22 cents

This week there are a couple moneymakers on sale, but I'm afraid they are already gone off the shelves. People have been hungry for deals. But don't despair - just get a raincheck. The Airwick candles and Dove deodorant may not come in stock before the Publix coupons expire but more than likely your store will honor an expired PQ. I put a couple of my scenarios in my list but they have 0 quantity since they were out of stock.

I did the get $25 worth of P&G products (in one transaction) for the Bakeware Rebate, and also a duplicate receipt to get the $10 Rebate wyb $50 of products (which can have multiple receipts). Receive one (1) pink bakeware set from Good Cook's® Hope line which includes 3-Piece Mixing Bowl Set with Covers (6-Piece Total), Hi Temp Spatula, Oven Glove with Silicone Pad, 3-Piece Liquid Measuring Cup Set, Silicone Baking Sheet , and Tin Cookie Sheet when you purchase $25 of Procter & Gamble products in one (1) transaction from Publix. See the bakeware rebate form for all the products and rules.

So, back to my trip. I got some salad stuff and fresh fruit with all my overage from the raincheck on Milk Bones. I have one more raincheck I might save to use next week in case the sales aren't as good. I also got a $10 GC to use additional overage since we are pretty well stocked at home. I would like more Stouffers lasagne that is still on sale, but I don't have any more freezer space. I hate having to buy the 2.5 gallon water containers for my DH, but he insists on it to have fresh water at work. If anyone has any ideas how to wean him off this I would be glad to hear it. My pleas of how un-frugal it is don't seem to matter.

In case you never scored any of the Take Your Budget By the Horns Publix coupon booklets, you've got another chance. The USF store on Fowler found another box of those little green coupon booklets and is handing them out by request only. So stop by customer service and ask if they have any of "those little green coupon booklets" and they'll happily give you one, if you're sweet and ask nice they'll give you a couple.

Remember the current Green Advantage Flyer expires today with the vitamin deal, and a new Green Advantage Flyer starts Saturday with the $3/3 Dove PQ coupons. Get a few extra since it seems the stores run out of flyers early now that there are more of us couponers around.

Happy Shopping!

Does The Tooth Fairy Visit Adults?

Last year, I mentioned about how my tooth hurt when I ate hard food like granola. The tooth was probably cracked but the dentist couldn't see anything. Being the frugal person I am, my motto is "it's not a problem, til it's a problem". So I did nothing, except maybe nurture that side of my mouth to avoid pain from biting on that cracked tooth. This worked for a while, but then last week it finally happened - a chunk of my tooth came out while I was eating cereal. In case you've never experienced your tooth falling out - its like eating rocks. You feel a funny tingle and then crunch. Then you wiggle your tongue over there and confirm it really happened. I pull out the little piece and rolled it around in my fingers, pondering how much the tooth fairy would give me for part of a tooth. Probably not much. Not enough to cover the bill anyway.

So, now we have a problem. And it must be dealt with. I've let the dental plan expire, but since I did let it expire they want us back. So they sent a 25% off coupon to get us to renew. Good thing I waited. Not. Now I have to wait a couple days for it to become effective. Meanwhile I have a partial tooth in the back of my mouth. Luckily my dentist could fit me in first thing Monday. Today it was. So I took the whole day off work to enjoy my new tooth. Except it started off with going to the dentist.

I generally have pretty good teeth, but I still don't really care to go to the dentist. Part of the experience that bugs me the most is the noise. And the big needle of Novocain. I brought my own Ipod to help cover up the drilling noises, but there's not much you can do to avoid the cloud of dust and debris flying out of your mouth from drilling. I gagged at the smell of the burning tooth dust and metal. What an absolutely terrible combination of noises and odors. At least there was no blood in the mix. I think. So what seemed like a really long time they finished the drilling and moved on to the impressions and packing the core to ready it for the temporary crown. I tried not to watch but did happen to see the guy lifting a small black slimy string thing that looked like a worm, and drop it into my mouth. Then with his tool he starts pressing it into the mold where my new tooth stump is. I almost passed out it was so gross. He added some other stuff with a caulk gun and starts pumping in cement and then eventually tugged the worm back out, but it was yucky.

All in all it went smooth. I didn't drool that much, and my gums are tender, but not bleeding from all the hacking they did. The worst is over, except for having to pay. As I said before I signed up for dentalplans.com and it cost $134 for 13 months of coverage for both DH & I. The plan dropped the cost of the core and crown from $1321 down to $753. Almost half price just because I signed up for a dental plan. Definitely a frugal idea.

Juice In The City

Everyone loves a great deal, right?  And most people are totally overwhelmed with the amount of deals out there to be had, most of which are irrelevant to their day-to-day lives.  Enter Juice in the City.  They are a community of (mostly) moms who know their way around their respective cities and know about all those little hidden gems.  They provide a great deal each day (50% off or more) geared toward families in the local community by recommending a locally-owned, locally-run business.  There are typically a few sub-divided markets in each major city, so there is no worry about finding a good "deal" that isn't really a good deal after all because, while it is in your metro area, it is an hour away from your house.

Some examples of deals include restaurants, massages, family activities, local shops and services.  Juice in the City has exploded all over the country because of it's organic, word-of-mouth business model.  Don't you love to get a great recommendation from a close friend before you try out a new business?  That is exactly what Juice in the City provides.  Each business featured on the site has been personally tried by the person sourcing the deal, and they give honest feedback as to what to expect when you visit that business.  If you haven't checked it out yet, you really should!

As an aside, Juice in the City is always looking for people to promote their favorite businesses, as well as business to promote.  If you would like to earn a part-time income from home and recommend your favorite local businesses to others, check out the Juice in the City website and click on "We're Hiring!".

Or, if you own a business that you would like to have featured on the site, please check the lists below to see if your metro area is on either one.  If so, please contact Rachel and she can point you in the right direction.

Here are the cities where Juice in the City is already active:

Rachel is a stay-at-home mom to 3 little cuties in the Minneapolis suburbs.  She has recently discovered Juice in the City and couldn't be more excited!  She loves the part-time hours that work around her busy schedule (and the extra spending money doesn't hurt) and can't wait to utilize all the great deals when the Minneapolis market launches in just a few short weeks!

My Publix Trip - 2 Shops, paid $4.90

I had one of my most frustrating trips to the store as far as savings last night. First of all there were no MM items on the shelf, and the GM cereal that was free after coupons was picked over. It will only get worse as new couponers try to get on the bandwagon. Hopefully, they'll get equally as frustrated with couponing and give it up. Being the genius I am, I knew this would not be a satisfying trip so I stocked up on salad stuff before last weeks sale ended so I could get some overage with the dog treats. So I only needed to get a couple things and that was tough for me to stomach. Anyway, I'm going back on this last day to use up some coupons that expire today. So I'm posting both shops since I did one early. Overall its not that bad (for me) but that kind of comes with the territory some times.

In the early SS insert for Tampa today there are several Publix coupons that are quite good, another reason to get some extra papers this weekend. There will be tons of coupons in them, up to six inserts I hear. Anyway, the best PQ I see is $2/1 ANY Fiber One cereal (no size restrictions or usage restrictions) that will combine with the $1/2 9-25SS from last weekend. Or if you got the $1/1 Fiber One coupon in your home delivered TT last weekend, that can be combined as well for a $0.50 MM. There is also a Diet Pepsi 2L PQ in the SS that will combine with the Pepsi MQ in the Pepsico insert, so look for that.

Good Luck with your shopping!
