World Cup Shopping

While everyone was watching the Womens World Cup Soccer match, I was riding motorcycle around visiting the Hillsborough State Park, dodging rain clouds and stopping at a couple stores. We managed to pick up the flyer from WD with the milk bone coupon that would stack with the MQ (5/22 RP) at Publix. I also was looking for the elusive $5 GC P&G tearpad that always was ripped clean on all the displays we saw.

I felt like the World Cup soccer women at one store when I happened to score some Gas-x ($10 off 3 MQ 7-17ss), some Always ($5 GC wyb 3 tearpad), and lots of the papermate pens, Bic pencils, Scotch tape and Scotch scissors. I knew my order would take a bit longer to checkout so when the employee was encouraging people to step to an new line, I mentioned I had a bunch of coupons and maybe they could open a line for me. The customer service manager gladly did that and smoothly handled all my stuff until he came upon all the TQ's. Then he decided to enforce the "one per transaction" wording which was okay, except it meant my whole order calculations were off. It was like getting a penalty in the World Cup! I suggested just starting over with what I could buy without TQ's, which wasn't much – certainly not all my moneymaker pens. This store has always been very coupon friendly and has always accepted any number of TQ's I've had. They also waited to scan my GC til the very end and of course the total was in the negative which doesn't really help one fly under the radar. I think when he realized I was getting a good amount of overage is when he decided to enforce the one per transaction wording.

Anyway, I didn't contest any of it and just merrily got my remaining deals knowing I can easily get the product at another friendly store. The hardest thing about extreme couponing is when you have a plan and it gets foiled. The dejection is almost enough to make you not want to go back into a store, even if you know you are right. I just really hate any conflict with staff about coupons and I think most people are like that too. It's actually why a lot of people I know just don't bother with it – it's too much trouble at the store. To me it was like the end of the World Cup soccer game for the women, they were so close to a win but then in the end, it just didn't work out.

How To Get Free Amazon Gift Cards

I'm sure a lot of you have joined Swagbucks for free by now and are on your way to your rewards. But did you know there are lots of ways to earn points besides just searching on your swagbucks home page?
Did you know that every Friday is MEGA Swag Bucks Day? SwagBucks has increased your chances of scoring BIG #Swagbucks on Fridays. Swagbucks is a fabulous program that rewards you with AWESOME prizes just for doing your everyday searches online.

Since I've joined Swagbucks I have earned tons of $5 Amazon gift card codes. Don't have a Swag Bucks account? Why not sign up today and earn 30 SwagBucks to get you started. Swagbucks just updated their policies and now allows each individual per household to have an account!
Here are some tips to get more swagbucks everyday.
-Make http://www.swagbucks.com/your homepage, or add it to your favorites. Doing this will help you remember to use the swagbucks search engine everyday. Did you know that you can win multiple swagbucks each day? I usually do searches throughout the day and try to use different computers. I have two words that I enter and ALWAYS win at least once on each computer with those words. So if you find a word that works for you, try it regularly. Keep in mind though, don't over search. The swagbucks search engine is designed to detect weird search patterns. If it feels you're searching too frequently you will be shown the rules screen. I've never seen the screen but have heard about it happening to others.
1. If you are using your personal computer, install the toolbar to make your searches easy to do.
2. Make it a point to do some Swagbucks searches on Fridays for sure. On Fridays, you can win as many as 100 Swag Bucks in one search.
3. Become a fan on Facebook and a follower on Twitter. Swagcodes are released daily through these sites.
4. Do the Daily Poll every day to earn 1 swagbuck.
5. Do the Special Offers (click RED square) every day but just select NO THANKS for each offer, click through a few until you are awarded 2 SBs.
6. Earn Swagbucks by using the Swagbucks Shop and Earn site. By using this portal site to shop you will earn 1 swagbuck for every $5.00 spent.
7. Trade-in your old cell phone and electronics and exchange them for swagbucks!
8. Set up a Google Reader page, and install the widget on your feed page, or install it on your blog. Lots of codes are posted on the widget.
9. Check the Swagbucks Blog for clues and codes, usually there are codes a couple times a week posted there.
10. Check this forum discussion for codes that are currently active that other users have posted.
Give it a chance. It took me a while to develop routines of doing my searches through Swagbucks and figuring out how and where to find swagcodes.
11. Click on the tab TRUSTED SURVEYS everyday to earn 1 Swagbuck. You don't even have to do a survey, just click the tab.

Frugal Travel to Improve Your Health

Even though gas prices have stabilized, there is still great incentive to ride your bike as a means of commuting. Riding a bicycle is a great, frugal way to travel and also improves your health. Remember, your health is your greatest wealth. Having a bunch of money isn't that much fun if you aren't healthy to enjoy it.

If your destination is less than ten miles from your home, it wouldn't take much effort to bicycle as a regular occurrence. Five miles is only twenty minutes of riding and you don't get sweaty enough to negate the cleanliness of your morning shower. I do recommend you wear different biking clothes for the ride (preferably a high visibility color shirt, and your black spandex biking shorts for comfort) and just change clothes in the rest room or a private room when you get to your destination. It's also important to wear stiff, thick soled shoes like my Keen Commuters (which I absolutely love!!) which you can get for a discount with Shoebacca Coupons. Proper shoes will help avoid foot numbness from the road shock, along with biking gloves.

To make this bicycle commuting a healthy habit, it's important to have good solid equipment. Make sure your bicycle is tuned up and lubed, with fully aired tires. Also a strong rack is necessary so you don't have to wear a back pack with your stuff, which just makes you sweaty. Along with proper clothing, shoes, and equipment you need to wear your helmet. My hair is damp in the morning from my shower so when I get to work, I just comb it and it springs to life and looks great. With all the bike and motorcycle helmets I wear, it helps to have permed hair that bounces back from the helmet.
Its also important to make sure you know the rules of the road - ride with the traffic as far to the right as possible - but not on the sidewalk if you can avoid it. Your bike is considered a motor vehicle so make sure you follow all traffic signals at intersections, and give pedestrians the right of way. Signal with your arms to let drivers know you are turning, and use your bike bell to warn people you are coming along.
You will love the fresh air biking allows you to enjoy, get off your phone and get outside and live life.

How Would You Like To Be In Casey Anthony's Shoes?

Just think of it, your life is not really in your hands - it's in the hands of a bunch of strangers who may judge you based on some information presented to them, valid or not. It would not really be a great feeling, to be in Casey Anthony's shoes at all. But now she has her life back, but what will it be like?

The feelings she may have could be similar to ones we share when we are relieved of a great debt, or when we finally come to a frugal decision. Sometimes we have to make decisions we know nothing about, so we have to learn about the factors involved to come to our decision. Like for instance, DH needs to get some new walking shoes. Almost all his current shoes are uncomfortable since he broke his foot in that motorcycle collision last September, and his foot healed with a bump where the break was on the top of his foot. So now almost all his shoes hurt when he wears them.

So the plan is to try on some shoes in a store to make sure they fit, but then to go online and find a deal or coupon. DH may feel a little like Casey Anthony, after almost losing his life in an accident, he has a fresh start and can walk again and get some good shoes.

How You Can Help Bicyclists & Walkers

Federal funding for bicycling and walking is in jeopardyWe need you to send a short email today to your members of Congress.
Today, Congressman John Mica of Florida, Chairman of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, outlined his plans for the new transportation bill and called for the elimination of dedicated funding for biking and walking programs, which he suggested, "do not serve a federal purpose."
In the Senate, James Inhofe of Oklahoma is leading a similar attack. Inhofe, a senior member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, said that one of his top-three priorities for the next multi-year federal transportation bill is to eliminate "frivolous spending for bike trails."
If Representative Mica and Senator Inhofe get their way, dedicated funding for three crucial programs — Safe Routes to School, Transportation Enhancements, and Recreational Trails — will be eliminated. The cost-effective federal investment in bicycling that is making our nation better will shrink dramatically. We can't allow this to happen.
That's why we are asking you to reach out to the two U.S. Senators and the U.S. Representative who represent you in Congress. Ask them to support ongoing, dedicated funding for biking and walking in the next transportation bill. (You can find your representatives and send your note directly from the website. Click here to review clear, basic, suggested text for your email. Feel free to customize it and/or add a personal story.)
Your simple messages will make a difference. You can help refute Representative Mica's and Senator Inhofe's unreasonable, counterproductive cuts. You can help assure that progress will continue in all 50 states to make bicycling safer and better for people of all ages.

Free Pool Test Kits: Dip before You Dive!

ACCLogoPoolTestKitCPTImageWaterQuality

Summer is here and the Water Quality and Health Council, in partnership with the American Chemistry Council, is once again offering free pool test kits to the public through its Healthy Pools Campaign.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends swimmers check the pH and chlorine levels of swimming pools before getting into the water.  Adequate pool chemistry helps reduce the risk of recreational water illnesses like "swimmer's ear," which CDC says is responsible for over two million trips to the doctor each year and $500 million in healthcare costs.
Order your free pool test kit today at www.healthypools.org/freeteststrips.  You are invited to return to that website to upload your pool readings to a national data collection map.  There is even a smart phone-friendly view to make data uploading convenient poolside.

Have a safe and healthy summer!

How To Attend Concerts for Free

Tomorrow night we're going to see the Motley Crue and Poison concert and we actually paid money for tickets. While this might not be unusual for most, it is for us. Over the past several years we've seen a few hundred concerts and 99% of them have not cost us any money. The main reason is that we're frugal and as much as I love live concert events and sporting events, sometimes I leave feeling like it just wasn't worth it. Like for instance tomorrow's concert tickets cost $95 each, but with the $5.50 facility charge, and the $30.40 convenience charge, and the $4 order processing charge the total comes to $230 for an evening of rock n' roll. Add on $11 beers and maybe a snack and it soon becomes a huge non-frugal affair.

On the other hand, if we were working at the St Pete Times Forum as guest services staff or security, we would be making over $100, and see the show too. So the swing between paying $230 and not making $100 makes it a $330 opportunity cost to attend the show as a guest. But we don't work there anymore since the motorcycle accident last fall, so now when we want to see a concert - we pay. We've actually seen Motley Crue about three times in the past few years, but they put on a great show and we know its worth it to attend and party, rather than babysit work.

The point is, if you want to see events for free, one way is to work for the venue, or in some cases you can even volunteer. We also used to work for Sentry Event Services and they staff events at Tropicana Field (baseball), Raymond James Stadium (football), the USF Sundome (concerts), and the Tampa Amphitheatre (concerts). Sentry will let your civic, community or church group volunteer and the money that would have been paid to staff goes to the organization you represent. The cool thing is that if you volunteer you really don't work that hard and you get good spots in the front sections. You're not going to get rich volunteering or working for $8/hour, but you can see lots of events for free.

But if you're not into working and standing for six hours at an event, you can still try another method to avoid having to pay for your tickets. We used to do this a lot before the economy took a dive, but I think it would still work for the right event. We would just buy an extra pair of tickets to an event and list them for sale on Stubhub for some ridiculous price and they would sell. The profit from the sale of one pair paid for our pair of tickets so we essentially went for free. But keep in mind this is risky and you may end up with tickets you have to sell for less than face value, or you may have to attend the show yourself. We would often buy a pair of tickets and plan to work the event, but if the tickets didn't sell we would just go as guests. This never happened but it was our insurance. You could also buy tickets for an event you know would sell out, (like playoff games) and take the profit and buy tickets to a concert or event you do want to attend.
