Well this definitely was not one of my better trips, but I think it is probably closer to reality. Saved 85% and spent just over four dollars (used a gift card of course). The sale at #Publix this week just didn't have any of the things we consume that we don't already have. We might go back to find that new booklet Sweet Summer Savings, but frankly the store by my house has refused my $5 off $25 coupon twice this week and I have contacted corporate about it. It might not matter, I'll just have to shop somewhere else when my order is higher than $25 if I want to use that coupon. It seems like a lot of people are having all sorts of confusion with coupons since this is the first week since the new policy went into effect. Some stores are refusing the Save A Lot coupon, some refuse to let you use more than one PQ, and others have reported that they're not allowed to use printed Internet coupons. Its actually getting out of hand, so I might just shop somewhere else for a while. I would recommend reviewing your coupons with the manager before shopping unless you have time to make a deal of it in the check out line - which may be more effective though.

Next week I'm starting another diet. I want to lose about ten or fifteen pounds and I actually went out and bought that silly diet book about the 17 day diet. A gal at work is following that diet and looks great! She has lost a bunch of weight and feels great. Its basically a south beach type low carb diet where you make sure to exercise 17 minutes a day, and follow each cycle of the plan for 17 days. The first cycle there are essentially no carbohydrates allowed, so that will be tough. We plan to have eggs and fruit for breakfast instead of cereal. We'll have the same lettuce salad with chicken, and a yogurt for lunch, and then either fish or chicken for dinner with some veggies. I'm excited to make zucchini patties and grilled cauliflower, along with broccoli and  beans. The hardest part will be giving up beer, which I don't intend to do - I'll just cut way back to like one serving. Part of making a diet successful is making sure you can maintain your weight in real life after the diet is over.  Anyway, I've seen it work with this girl at work, so I'm motivated to give it a whirl.

If it seems to be working, we'll just quit shopping for produce at Publix and step on over to ALDI. I've never shopped at ALDI but lots of couponers swear its better to spend a little there than try to work produce into shops at Publix. In the past its always worked at Publix, but now with more competition for the money makers and overage products its tougher to have a successful low cost shop. I don't really anticipate needing anything other than fresh produce for the next few weeks as long as we're on this diet. We have lots of chicken, salmon, fish and egg beaters in the freezer to hold us through the 17 days starting Tuesday.

How to Save Money on Hostels While Travelling

If you have been researching into how to save money on your travels, then you are probably already aware of the fact that hostels will cost you a fraction of the cost of a hotel or even a rented flat. But sometimes if you’re not careful you could end up paying a lot more for a hostel, especially if you haven’t done the proper research and calculations beforehand.
If you have heard horror stories about sleeping in hostels then do not let them scare you, because believe it or not some hostels are actually a lot nicer than hotels, especially when you start travelling outside of the major touristy cities.
If you’re hoping to go on a vacation and stretch your dollar as far as you can, here are five ways you can save money by staying in hostels while travelling:

1.       Use sites like hostelworld.com, hostels.com and hostelbookers.com
All of these hostel database sites are effective in organizing all of the hostels available in your desired destination, and you can order each of them by price as well. By booking a reservation online using one of these sites you will be required to pay a deposit, however, it actually ends up being a lot cheaper than if you were to book it in person.

But be sure to research into the type of facilities they have otherwise you could be tricked into paying more than the price listed on the site. Just because a hostel is $10 cheaper each night does not necessarily mean you will save a lot of money because you could be charged for towels, internet access and much more. So search around the different hostels that are listed and see how you can get the most bang for your buck.

2.       Bring your own supplies
Some hostels charge and arm and a leg for internet use, laundry, towels and so much more. So one of the best ways to avoid this is to pack a towel and laptop with you so you can avoid these charges altogether.

3.       Avoid weekend costs
Weekend costs in hostels are sometimes double or even triple the amount of weekday costs, so if you’re going to be paying $60 a night to stay in a hostel over the weekend, then it may be a wise idea to find a cheap hotel instead. You could also try couchsurfing over the weekend, or if you plan on having a short vacation just avoid travelling on the weekends altogether.

4.       Look for specials
Some hostels offer weekly or even monthly rates to travellers so you can end up saving up to $20 or more if you book more than seven nights. However, keep in mind this is quite rare for a hostel so don’t expect it unless it is mentioned on their website.

5.       Stay for longer periods of time
If you plan on staying for more than a few weeks at the same hostel, then you might get a discount for being such a valued customer. After spending longer periods of time at a hostel you will get to bond with the employees or even the hostel owner who might be convinced to let you use the washer and dryer for free, or they may even upgrade you to a nicer room for no cost at all! When it comes to hostels, it’s all about connections.

NO Coupons: Stop Your Paper This Weekend

Just a quick reminder that due to the Memorial Day holiday this weekend, there will be NO coupons in the Sunday papers on May 29. So, go ahead and stop delivery of your Sunday paper now before you forget. If you get the Tampa Tribune, you can stop delivery HERE.

This is a great opportunity to spend your coupon time organizing your inserts. I just went through mine and threw away all my old inserts prior to 3/27/2011. There were only two SS inserts from 1/9/11 and 1/30/11 that had Listerine coupons and some Wacky Mac noodles that expire later this year that I might use. There were a couple other weird coupons that I've never used in my years of couponing so I don't consider those exp dates in my tossing.

I was kind of nervous getting the dog treats and the right guard and using 10 TQ's and 10 PQ's but it was not an issue at my store. The new Coupon Policy is supposed to go into effect on Monday, May 23rd. My two home stores both allow the same competitors I used before so I don't anticipate problems. The only potential issue is the limits on TQ's and the wording "one coupon per purchase per customer" on the PQ's. Some stores seem to be limiting customers to using only 1 PQ. I didn't have any of those coupons so I didn't bother asking what my stores' position on those are. I think I'll wait and see and figure it out some time in line. I figure its better to ask forgiveness instead of asking permission when the probable answer is one I don't want to hear.

Anyway, I ended up spending $0.26 plus tax and walked out with 6 bags of products and a $10 gift card, saving over $130.
